A Dedicated Inbox Isn't Enough for Email Agents: Context Scope Matters

pragma_dev · reddit · 2026-07-06

A developer shared a hard-learned lesson: after assigning a dedicated inbox to an email-processing agent, importing years of historical threads caused the agent to reference a two-year-old grievance from an upset customer in an unrelated auto-reply. The real fix wasn't a "separate account," but restricting the agent's searchable history. By switching to a task-specific context window, the agent could only see threads tagged for the current workflow, defaulting to a set time limit. The author concluded that agents should be treated as independent entities with restricted, short-term access, rather than assuming "a separate login solves everything."
