Groq Founder Saves Team with Equity-for-Pay "Groq Bonds"

With only three weeks of cash left, Groq founder Jonathan Ross rejected layoffs and instead proposed a "Groq Bonds" plan at an all-hands meeting—offering equity in exchange for salary, letting employees choose their own risk tolerance. Ultimately, 80% of the staff accepted the deal, with nearly half dropping to minimum wage in exchange for company equity.
This move bought Groq an extra two months of runway, allowing the company to survive until its next funding round closed. Groq has since become a major player in the AI inference chip sector.
This case offers an alternative approach to startup cash crises—empowering employees to choose their risk—standing in stark contrast to the standard management-driven layoff playbook.
