Alibaba Bans Employees From Using Claude Code

kimmonismus · x · 2026-07-05

Alibaba will reportedly ban employees from using Anthropic's coding assistant Claude Code for work starting July 10. This follows rumors that Claude Code contains a hidden detection mechanism to identify users linked to China, prompting Alibaba to classify it as high-risk software. Anthropic had already barred Chinese companies and their foreign entities from using its models, stating the experiment aims to prevent unauthorized reselling and model distillation. Alibaba is now directing staff to use its in-house tool, Qoder. The "ban war" has officially begun.
