Is Data Center Water Consumption Overstated?

AndyMasley · x · 2026-07-03

The author challenges media claims that the true water cost of data centers is far higher than reported. Data centers only report on-site water usage, while the bulk of consumption comes from power plants located hundreds of miles away. The real anomaly is that data centers consume significantly less water per unit of energy than the power plants supplying them—higher efficiency actually means less water. Thus, the "true water cost" framework is easily misinterpreted.
