vLLM eyes Rust migration as inference engines race to rewrite the stack
AccBalanced · x · 2026-10-27
vLLM's Woosuk shared that vLLM is isolating model-specific code and considering moving more of the stack to Rust — the same direction as ekzhang1's Resin runtime.
Ecosystem notes:
- vLLM already added a Rust frontend; SGLang's prefix cache core is Rust too.
- Both engines run DeepSeek's open kernels within a few % of DeepInfer, but took different paths: vLLM found the cost in experts (spreading them across GPUs, balancing load), while SGLang focused on reducing memory traffic and kernel launches.
Open question: which team ships a Rust scheduler first?
