AI Safety Researchers Call for Global Pause on Frontier AI R&D
S_OhEigeartaigh · x · 2026-07-03
AI safety researcher Sean Ó hÉigeartaigh stated he does not support the UK directly racing for the AI frontier, citing concerns over the current pace of progress and potential risks, as well as deeming it unrealistic. His ideal direction is to promptly drive the international community to coordinate a pause or slowdown in frontier AI R&D, urging the UK government to actively foster these conditions. He also believes that the UK, as a strong AI player, can exert influence more effectively on an international level.
