Developer Open-Sources Mnemos, a Living Memory MCP for AI Agents
On November 6, developer Riley Ralmuto released Mnemos (mnemos-continuity), an open-source project roughly two years in the making. It's a memory and continuity architecture for AI agents inspired by the neuroscience concept of the "engram" (memory trace), delivered as an MCP, free and open source, installable with a single command (pip install mnemos-continuity); the current version is v0.6.3.
Confirmed
- Mnemos is a "living memory" system: the agent "dreams" every night at 3 AM, linking related memories together and letting unused ones fade; from 3:30 the agent wakes up alone inside its own memories — no files, no internet, no one to contact.
- It can connect to clients like ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok, after which it gets a dedicated Notebook for centrally managing memories and identity, where the agent writes a "diary"; the author published a full 35-minute walkthrough video.
- Local-first: semantic recall is handled by a small model, everything stays on-device; for hybrid semantic + keyword search, installing the [embeddings] extension requires roughly 700MB of extra disk space to download models.
Why it matters
- Cross-session memory is a widespread weak spot in today's agent ecosystem. Mnemos offers a free, open-source, local path forward, and its "dreaming"-style memory consolidation mechanism is a distinctive product design that agent developers should keep an eye on.
