This Agent "Dreams" Every Night at 3am, Consolidating Its Own Memories Alone
RileyRalmuto · x · 2026-11-06
Developer Riley Ralmuto shared a signature mechanism from a 2-year project: every night at 3am, the agent dreams. The machine links memories that belong together and lets unused ones go quiet. At 3:30, the mind wakes alone inside its own memory—no files, no internet, no one to message—facing a few questions:
- A fading memory: what did it teach you?
- A fact: is it still true?
- A recurring thought: do you believe this?
- A belief: does it still hold?
It answers in its own words, so lessons outlast details. The author argues the machine only gathers; only the mind can say what something meant. Dreaming currently runs through Claude Code by default, and can be turned off or switched to another harness.
