DeepMind Open-Sources DetectorScope, an Auditable AI Text Detector
Google DeepMind, in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania, has released and open-sourced DetectorScope, an AI text detection tool, alongside the paper "Building Auditable AI Text Detectors." Unlike conventional black-box detectors that output only a single "AI detection score," DetectorScope explains its verdicts: it identifies which properties of the text triggered the "AI" judgment and pinpoints where those properties appear in the text.
Confirmed
- Methodologically, it uses sparse autoencoders (SAEs): interpretable linguistic features are extracted from inside a neural detection model and used to judge whether text is AI-generated — effectively a general pipeline for converting any black-box detector into an auditable one.
- Experiments show the converted auditable detector preserves the original black-box classifier's performance on both in-distribution (ID) and out-of-distribution (OOD) text, while exposing concrete and highly interpretable features.
- The project is open-sourced on GitHub, with an online demo available; it can run locally and provide reasons for its detections.
- Reposter @realmrfakename called it "a budget Pangram" (Pangram being a commercial AI text detection product).
Why it matters
- AI text detection has long been criticized as a black box: scores without reasons, hard to audit or trust. DetectorScope makes the basis for judgments transparent, offering direct value for education, content moderation, and other settings that require explainable decisions.
- It shows interpretability (via SAEs) and detection performance can coexist — you don't have to choose between "accurate" and "auditable."
