Study: 96% of ChatGPT Memories Are Saved Without Consent, Half Profile Users' Psyche

A paper titled "The Algorithmic Self-Portrait," authored by researchers from Max Planck, Ruhr University Bochum, IIT Kharagpur, and TU Delft, and accepted by ACM Web Conference 2026, collected 2,050 memories from 80 real ChatGPT users via GDPR data requests, offering the first systematic look at how ChatGPT's memory actually works: the vast majority of memories are not saved by users but written unilaterally by the system, and much of the content amounts to a psychological profile of the user. The findings deserve attention from anyone using or building AI assistant products.
