petesena · x · 2026-10-24
A paper titled The Algorithmic Self-Portrait from Max Planck, Ruhr University Bochum, IIT Kharagpur and TU Delft (accepted at ACM Web Conference 2026) analyzed 2,050 ChatGPT memories donated by 80 users via GDPR data exports.
- Only 84 memories (4%) came from users explicitly saying "remember this"; ChatGPT chose to save the other 96% on its own.
- OpenAI does document this behavior, but almost nobody reads that page. Sample was mostly US/Europe users.
