Diffusion LM pretraining compute gap is 3-8x, not the consensus 16x
volokuleshov · x · 2026-10-16
Kuleshov's team argues the consensus that diffusion LMs need 16x the training compute of autoregressive models is outdated. Measured the way DLMs are deployed today—exact likelihood, max-confidence samplers, block diffusion, encoder-decoder—the gap shrinks to 3-8x.
