Apple unveils HomeView, its first smart home display with AI and face recognition

At its October 13 "Welcome home" event, Apple officially unveiled the long-rumored HomeView, its first smart home hub with a screen, priced at $299 and going on sale November 13. This marks Apple's first move to bring AI hardware into the home, positioning the device as a central hub for household smart living.

Confirmed

• The device features a roughly 7-inch (6.98-inch diagonal) square Liquid Retina touchscreen mounted on a speaker base, described as "a small iPad on a smart speaker," usable either on a tabletop or wall-mounted, with the wall-mount version specially tuned
• Built on the A18 chip with Apple Intelligence, it integrates the Home app as a home control hub
• Equipped with a 12-megapixel FaceTime camera supporting video calls
• Facial recognition can distinguish up to 6 family members, personalizing clock, weather, music, and other content for each person
• Includes Apple Music, Apple TV, podcasts, audiobooks, and other built-in services; supports casting and playback from third-party audio/video apps on iPhone, plus cross-device Handoff (e.g., music playing on your phone can continue on the device)
• Priced at $299 (a Polymarket post said $300, but The Verge's hands-on confirmed $299), on sale November 13

Why it matters

• This is Apple's first step into the home AI hardware market, combining Apple Intelligence, facial-recognition personalization, and smart home control in a single device
• It puts Apple in direct competition with screen-equipped smart speakers from Amazon and Google, as Apple enters the category with its own hardware for the first time
• Outlets like The Verge have already gone hands-on, showing the product is at a genuinely usable stage rather than a concept announcement
