Anthropic Opens Claude Subscriptions to Third-Party Agents with Monthly API Allowance
Anthropic has relaxed usage restrictions on Claude subscriptions: subscription credits are no longer limited to the official Claude Code and can be used in third-party tools and agents. Developer Lucas Meijer initially noticed the terms seemed to have changed, then corrected himself, saying Anthropic had in fact adjusted the rules earlier; an Anthropic employee officially confirmed the policy on Hacker News on October 13.
Confirmed
- When logged in with a Claude account, everyday interactions, scripts run via claude -p, the Agent SDK, and third-party tool calls all consume subscription credits; third-party agents like Amp can also log in and be used
- According to an Anthropic support document relayed by @danielmac8, starting October 7, Claude Max and Team plans include monthly API credits covering the Claude Agent SDK, claude -p, the Claude API, and Claude Managed Agents, at no extra charge
- An Anthropic employee confirmed on HN that subscribers can use their subscription credits in the third-party harnesses above
Not yet confirmed
- @lucasmeijer initially thought the terms had just been changed, then self-corrected that the rules had been adjusted earlier; the official effective date is October 7 per official documentation
Why it matters
- Subscription credits were previously locked to official clients; the relaxation lets third-party agent ecosystems built on the Claude Agent SDK directly reuse user subscriptions, significantly expanding the scope and value of a Claude subscription and potentially lowering the barrier for developers who would otherwise pay for the API separately
