"Insects Matter More Than People" Goes Viral, Sparking Backlash Against EA Utilitarianism

A viral ethics controversy erupted in the Effective Altruism (EA) community after blogger Benthamsbulldog published "Insects Matter More Than People in the Aggregate," arguing that the sheer number of insects may give them greater aggregate moral weight than humans. After the post unexpectedly broke out of niche circles, the author added an editor's note insisting he was just an individual blogger, but the dispute escalated into a broader critique of EA and its influence on AI safety.

Confirmed

• Benthamsbulldog argued insects matter more than people in the aggregate and fought critics on social media; @thedimitri mocked this as quintessential EA thinking. Critics noted the logic, taken to its extreme, implies humanity should go extinct.
• Multiple sharers attacked EA: @MarvinTBaumann noted the fight had gone mainstream; @wenragnarok and @Patrice blasted EA's posture of "repeatedly telling you they know morality better"; Patrice specifically criticized the "pseudo moral arithmetic" of assuming insects suffer like humans and multiplying by huge numbers, arguing that if the math says humans lose to insects, the premises—not humanity's status—are what's broken.
• EA scholar Matthew Adelstein was also drawn in: @teortaxesTex relayed that he had argued related human-value questions and elsewhere favored mass insect elimination on grounds of insects' net-negative lives; Tracewoodgrains publicly called such views "morally weird" and criticized the timing.
• @perrymetzger argued in discussion with teortaxesTex that "how do you measure" is not pedantry but the core reason utilitarianism yields terrible outcomes: utility functions are arbitrary, subjective, often foolishly chosen and impossible to operationalize; consistently applying them necessarily brings bad results.
• Former DeepMind researcher stanislavfort offered a technical critique: moral problems are unsolved and any moral model is a limited approximation; like Newtonian gravity failing at black-hole scales, naive utilitarian math produces absurd conclusions out of distribution.
• @AaronBergman18 offered a measured defense: claiming "human experience is lexically superior to insect experience" or that "insect experience is worth less than 10^-7 of human experience" are both defensible open questions, and many mocking BB underestimate the difficulty of these problems.

Unconfirmed

• How large the value gap between human and insect experience actually is remains an open question, with no operational measurement method admitted by either side.

Why it matters

• Beneath the insect-welfare surface, the fight targets the operational flaws of utilitarian ethics—a core issue in AI alignment and value specification; stanislavfort's out-of-distribution analogy extends the critique to a machine-learning perspective.
• Critics broadly fear that people holding such views are trying to write moral frameworks for superintelligent AI, and that utilitarian arithmetic encoded into an AI's value function could yield anti-human conclusions—making this episode a case study of the fault lines between EA and AI-safety discourse.
• AaronBergman18's intervention shows some voices treat this as a serious open philosophical question rather than a joke; the debate is not one-sided.
