Pinokio 8.2 ships Universal Disk Saver for system-wide deduplication

Pinokio, a local AI app manager, released v8.2.0 with Universal Disk Saver, which author cocktailpeanut calls the most important update in the project's history. It automatically discovers and deduplicates duplicate files across the entire file system at the byte level, potentially freeing hundreds of gigabytes or even terabytes of wasted disk space.

Confirmed

• Disk Saver automatically finds and deduplicates duplicate files system-wide, byte by byte
• Deduplication covers not just AI model files but runtimes, libraries, DLLs, and binaries—any file
• No need to manually pick an original file, create symlinks, or maintain a central repository; files stay in place with only underlying duplicate bytes deduplicated, making it more transparent than traditional symlink approaches
• The 8.2 release also includes other updates such as nested Pinokio directories (per the GitHub project page with 7.9k stars)

Why it matters

• Locally installing multiple AI apps often means repeatedly downloading the same large models and runtimes, bloating disk usage; cross-app automatic deduplication directly addresses this pain point, and the in-place, transparent design lowers the barrier to use
