Google Launches Expert Intelligence, Bringing Google Play Books into Gemini Notebook

On August 28, Google announced its company-wide "Expert Intelligence" initiative, first landing in Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM). Users can import eligible Google Play Books and interact with the content via AI, with answers grounded directly in the book text. According to Steven Johnson, roughly 100,000 Google Play titles are supported at launch, with publisher approval secured through partnerships with Penguin Random House, Bloomsbury and top authors. It marks a major step in Google's effort to systematically bring authoritative, trusted sources into its AI experiences.

Confirmed

• Expert Intelligence is a cross-Google initiative partnering with publishers including Penguin Random House and Bloomsbury, bringing trusted sources (especially books) into AI experiences, with gradual rollout to other Google products
• About 100,000 Google Play ebooks are supported at launch with publisher approval
• Supported interactions include asking questions about the whole book, applying author insights to real problems, generating quizzes, creating audio overviews of key takeaways, and combining author insights with personal notes
• More sources will follow, including third-party subscription content, business research reports and textbooks, and the feature will expand to Google Search's AI Mode

Why it matters

• This is a signature move to systematically bring "trusted sources" into the Gemini ecosystem, aiming to boost the authority of AI answers via publisher partnerships while addressing creators' concerns over copyrighted content used by AI
• For users, professional content like textbooks and research reports entering Notebook completes the AI-assisted learning and research scenario; expansion to Search AI Mode will widen the impact
