Google Launches Expert Intelligence, Making 100,000+ E-books AI-Queryable With Publisher Blessing

Google has launched Expert Intelligence (EI), a new AI feature that lets readers interact with e-books purchased on Google Play via Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM)—asking questions, taking post-reading quizzes, or generating infographics of key data.
- Launches with 100,000+ English-language titles, mostly nonfiction, from publishers including Penguin Random House, Macmillan, Bloomsbury, and O'Reilly.
- Unlike typical LLMs, Google works directly with publishers to guarantee answers come from the book itself rather than training data—an approach that won rare publisher praise; PRH CEO called it "an example of how AI use cases can be developed responsibly."
- Context: publishers sued Google in July over Gemini training copyright infringement; the tool was led by nonfiction author Stephen Johnson, who joined Google Labs in 2022.
- Google says EI will soon expand to surfaces beyond Gemini Notebook.
