ChatGPT Plus users cancel subscriptions over new 5-hour usage cap
Starting August 26, multiple Reddit users discovered that ChatGPT Plus accounts had been given a new 5-hour rolling usage limit, separate from the weekly quota, applying to scenarios such as Codex, Work, Workspace Agents, and Chat. Since the 5-hour limit often triggers before the weekly cap, users' remaining weekly quota becomes effectively meaningless. Many users complained this crippled their production workflows, and some have already canceled their subscriptions over it.
Confirmed
- @Lucifer19821 found and confirmed that Plus accounts show a 5-hour rolling limit, independent of the weekly quota, covering Codex, Work, Workspace Agents, and Chat
- @TommyOnRedditt reported that running production tasks in ChatGPT Work consumes large amounts of quota even for simple, well-defined tasks, often breaking at the final step due to preview-environment errors, forcing tasks to be split into smaller pieces
- @CraftyRule5241 (a new user) said the 5-hour quota was exhausted after just 5-6 requests within 1-2 days, mostly for generating and tweaking Python scripts, and suspected long conversation histories were the cause
- @MrZi5 summarized user feedback: small-to-medium tasks drain the 5-hour limit in under 1 hour; some users' quota duration shrank from several days to under 36 hours
- @Funny-Trash-4286 said the app has become unusable due to the 5-hour limit, forcing work interruptions, and has canceled Plus — they won't return unless task completion or the weekly limit is restored
Not Yet Confirmed
- @Sad-Opportunity4940 questioned whether total usage allowances were quietly reduced: the official display says the limit is 100%, but the same tasks now consume 15% of quota versus 3-4% before, suspected to be a stealth cut after an update; this is personal observation and not officially confirmed
Why It Matters
- With the 5-hour limit stacked on the weekly cap, actual usable quota falls far short of subscriber expectations, directly hitting productivity scenarios that rely on Codex/Work, and clear cancellations have already occurred
- If the claim of accelerated quota consumption is true, it could hurt Plus's value-for-money and user retention; OpenAI has not publicly responded
