Skild AI unveils S1: robots learn 10-minute tasks from a single video demo
Skild AI has released S1, a robot foundation model whose core capability is "in-context learning": given just a single video prompt and without any fine-tuning, it can execute long-horizon complex tasks lasting over 10 minutes that were never seen during pretraining.
Confirmed
- S1 is positioned as a general-purpose robot foundation model, built as an underlying in-context learner that works much like the few-shot learning paradigm of language models (per @deepakpathak, @lukasmziegler).
- Official demos include learning to make crepes after a single video demonstration, with tasks lasting more than 10 minutes, along with instruction-following capability.
- According to @lukasmziegler: the Skild team assumed the crepe-making task must have been in the training data, but a search through millions of hours of pretraining data turned up nothing — indicating S1 inferred the entire task from a single human demonstration.
- S1 can handle out-of-distribution tasks (per @deepakpathak).
Why it matters
- Commentators including @Scobileizer see this as a GPT-3 / ChatGPT moment for robotics: if one-shot generalization holds, the paradigm for developing robot skills could shift from task-by-task engineering to general-purpose learning from demonstration, marking the beginning of general robot intelligence.
