OpenHands Update: Kimi K3 Becomes Free Default Model
OpenHands shipped its weekly update, making Kimi K3 the official free default model for Canvas and OpenHands Cloud. New users are pointed to this model by default and can get started without an API Key. This is the most impactful change in this release, alongside several features landing in automation, the conversation UI, and enterprise management.
Confirmed
- Kimi K3 is now the free default model for Canvas and OpenHands Cloud, defaulting for new users with no API Key required (@rajistics)
- A new conversation overview panel brings workspace details, code changes, resources, Skills, MCP, secrets, PRs, and Issues alongside the chat interface, showing committed and uncommitted changes in a single view
- The automation dashboard consolidates status, recent activity, run results, filters, and recommendations
- A new onboarding checklist / first-run wizard guides new users through LLM setup, their first conversation, task scheduling, Agent customization, and MCP configuration; the checklist can be hidden in app settings
- Local provider connections let multiple LLM profiles share the same credentials, so one update applies to all linked profiles
- Enterprise admins can configure Jira Cloud once for the whole organization in SaaS or OHE environments, so members don't need separate integrations
Why it matters
The free default model significantly lowers the barrier for new users, and combined with the onboarding wizard it should improve the getting-started experience. The conversation overview panel and automation dashboard bring scattered workflow information together, boosting everyday development and ops efficiency. One-time enterprise Jira Cloud configuration and credential reuse clearly target team and enterprise scenarios, showing OpenHands pushing forward on productization and organization-level deployment.
