Tesla Pushes FSD v14 Lite Distilled from HW4 to HW3 Vehicles

Tesla has begun pushing FSD v14 Lite to vehicles equipped with older HW3 (AI3) hardware. According to Tesla AI VP Ashok Elluswamy, the version has passed review and will see a wide rollout, potentially covering around 4 million vehicles. The most notable change is the removal of the brake confirmation step at startup, making the HW3 experience similar to newer HW4 (AI4) vehicles with a "tap to go" interaction.

Technical Details and Industry Discussion

The core of this HW3 update lies in "model distillation." The release notes explicitly state that the new model on HW3 is distilled from the larger model running on HW4, with HW4 v14 serving as the reference standard. Developer Teknium commented that this illustrates the dual nature of distillation: if the distilled smaller model performs closely to the larger one, it may indicate that the original larger model has unused computational capacity.

User Experience and Potential Impact

Beyond the architectural changes, the update also brings Self-Driving app support to AI3 vehicles. However, MatthewBerman and Raj (mobileraj) noted that the actual performance of the distilled model on HW3 remains to be seen and will require further real-world testing.
