SAP Completes Acquisition of Prior Labs

SAP has formally completed its acquisition of Prior Labs. According to co-founder Frank Hutter, the significance of the deal is not just ownership change: Prior Labs will keep operating as an independent frontier AI lab, while gaining far larger resources to expand what kind of research it can realistically attempt.

Post-acquisition positioning

Hutter says the lab’s core setup will stay the same after joining SAP: the same team, the same offices, and the same mission. He also says Prior Labs will continue working on open models rather than changing course because of the acquisition. The new element is the scale of support now available, which he describes as €1B+.

What changes for research

Hutter argues that the biggest shift is in research scope and time horizon. As a startup that is only 18 months old, Prior Labs previously had limited ability to commit to projects that require multiple years of work and involve high risk but potentially high payoff. With SAP behind it, the team says it can now pursue those longer-term, more ambitious moonshot-style efforts more boldly.

In that sense, the acquisition is being framed less as a reset of the lab’s identity and more as an expansion of its research runway and tolerance for long-cycle bets.
