Codex and ChatGPT Work surge as broader work-use cases emerge
Multiple posts in mid-July pointed to a rapid increase in Codex and ChatGPT Work usage, while also highlighting concrete workplace demos. Together, they suggest that attention is not only on growth metrics, but also on how the product is being framed beyond coding and into broader day-to-day work.
Growth signals
Gabriel Chua said on July 15 that weekly active users for Codex / ChatGPT Work had risen from 5 million to 8 million, and used that as evidence for his long-running view that "Codex is for everyone." Peter Yang said the product pair was growing by about 1 million users every few days and expected to hit 10 million that week. Separately, another post summarized the rise from 5 million to 9 million in a little over six weeks, including a jump from 6 million to 9 million in just four days, while downingARK linked the surge to the release of ChatGPT Work and its merge with Codex, claiming roughly 1 million new users per day from July 12 to July 14. These figures come from different posters and are not fully aligned in methodology, but all point to unusually fast acceleration.
Workflow demos and positioning
Gabriel Chua shared three ChatGPT Work demos aimed at showing how the product fits into ordinary work routines. The explicitly described scenarios include a "Daily Chief of Staff"-style workflow for everyday coordination, as well as a post-event workflow that turns event materials and notes into a recap page and also generates shareable social media copy. He framed this as a practical time-saver, suggesting that saving one hour a day compounds meaningfully over a year. Peter Yang also published a tutorial covering multiple ways he uses Work in practice.
Why it matters
Based on these posts, the story is not just that Codex / ChatGPT Work is adding users quickly. It is also being presented as a broader work platform: one that can support organizing information, producing summaries, and preparing follow-up content, rather than serving only as a coding tool.
