OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Work, Integrating Codex for Cloud-Based Work

OpenAI introduced the new ChatGPT Work mode, bringing the capabilities of the Codex agent to the general user interface. This mode allows users to assign tasks to an always-on "available computer" in the cloud. Even if the local device goes offline, the task can continue to run in the cloud for hours until the final result is produced. This move is widely seen as a direct response to Anthropic's earlier release of Claude Cowork.

Core Features and Positioning

The core positioning of ChatGPT Work is an on-demand, always-online cloud work computer. It can execute operations across apps and files, and supports access to various connections. Regarding multi-platform sync, Work mode shares the same set of projects with Chat mode across browsers and mobile devices. Additionally, users can use the Remote feature to take over and continue tasks already running on their local computers. It is reported that the mode is based on Codex and GPT-5.6, and related discussions also covered new models such as Sol, Terra, and Luna, alongside capabilities like Computer Use.

Developer Feedback and Recommendations

Regarding the practical experience, developer @dkundel shared their workflow using it for automation: without keeping an eye on the local computer, they can set up scheduled tasks to automatically handle affairs via Slack, email, and calendar every day. However, developer @haltakov summarized and advised that developers might want to skip Work mode and use Codex directly, as both have the same capabilities, but Codex generates code more directly.
