1X Unveils 25-DOF Tendon-Driven Hand for NEO Robot

1X Technologies officially unveiled a new robotic hand designed specifically for its NEO humanoid robot. Dubbed the "API to the physical world" by the company, the device has garnered significant attention for its 25 degrees of freedom and impressive fine manipulation capabilities, marking a crucial step toward the general utility of humanoid robots.

Key Technical and Design Details

The hand utilizes a tendon-driven system, relocating the motors to the forearm and transmitting force through the wrist. This low gear-ratio design enables "force transparency" and reverse-drivability, allowing external forces to be fed back along the joints, which reduces finger weight and minimizes collision impact. The hand features a total of 25 degrees of freedom (comprising 22 actuated DOFs and 3 wrist DOFs) and is covered with tactile skin, achieving a positioning accuracy of ±0.2mm. Additionally, it boasts IP68 waterproofing and is made with food-grade materials.

Demonstrations and Production Plans

In demonstrations, the hand showcased human-level dexterity, strength, and speed, performing complex tasks such as screwing in lightbulbs, picking up screws, assembling Legos, pouring tea, pulling zippers, and even sign language. 1X has established an end-to-end in-house production system, with hundreds of units already manufactured. The hand is currently available for pre-order at an early-bird price of $2,000, and the company plans to scale up to a production capacity of 10,000 units this year.
