VPR thread: when retrieval is strong enough, image matching re-ranking hurts
gabriberton · x · 2026-11-09
Gabriele Berton explains how Visual Place Recognition practice evolved: the classic pipeline retrieves 10 candidates with VPR, then re-ranks them with image matching. In the 2025 paper "To Match or Not to Match", his team found that with a strong retriever like MegaLoc, it's better NOT to match.
The reason: image matchers often find spurious matches even between images of different places, making them non-robust to false positives (illustrated by examples where places 119m/60m apart still yield 2000+ inliers). He hopes newer matchers like FlexGlue could restore matching's usefulness and suggests it as a quick experiment.
