AI safety researcher's cliff-race analogy: why the frontier lab should brake first and signal others
DavidSKrueger · x · 2026-11-09
AI safety researcher David Krueger offers an analogy for the AI race: cars chained together racing toward a prize at the edge of a cliff — no single player can stop without fearing others will drag it over. He argues that if the lead car slams the brakes and honks for others to stop, followers would more reasonably infer it can see the cliff than suspect a trick or running out of gas. The bigger risk is that rivals, in the heat of the chase, simply lack time to think clearly. Fortunately, despite short timelines, reality gives us more room than the story does to talk and reason through our actions.
