Dev clones DaVinci Resolve in C++ in 4 days with Claude Max, 10x faster on Linux
SeniorMatthew · reddit · 2026-11-09
Programmer Matthew built Kinoklip, an open-source C++ clone of DaVinci Resolve, in 4 days using Claude Max, targeting DaVinci's Linux pain points: painful install, missing h264/h265/AAC codecs, and poor non-NVIDIA performance. He reports at least 10x better performance on his machine, including a ThinkPad with Iris XE graphics.
- All 7 DaVinci pages are scaffolded but only the Edit tab is fully done; 30 small bugs were found manually, and every change runs through 170+ test programs
- All code is AI-written (author made only the icons); GPL 3.0, designed for performance, readability and extensibility
- Signature feature: "one file = one project" — dragged-in media is copied into the project for easy backup/sharing
- The author opposes AI art but sees AI coding to escape proprietary software as legitimate
