MARS Magazine reconstructs the timeline of Amazon MGM Studios dropping Artificial, the Sam Altman/OpenAI biopic: scripted by Simon Rich and pitched in 2024, directed by Luca Guadagnino from June 2025 — then came Amazon's $38B cloud deal with OpenAI and a $50B investment announced in Feb 2026, and by June 2026 Amazon refused to release the nearly finished film, which found a new home at Neon weeks later.
Studio chief Mike Hopkins this week offered the first official explanation but, per the author, dodged the central question of whether Altman leaned on the commercial relationship to kill the movie. Suspicion in Hollywood persists.
