Google quietly reversed its privacy pledge: consumer Gemini now routes Gmail/Drive data to human review

A detailed Reddit post documents that Google quietly reversed its 2023 promise that personal Gmail/Docs/Drive content would never be seen by human reviewers. Updated help docs and an Oct 16 blog edit confirm connected Drive/email can be routed into human review pipelines.
Key finding: ingestion is autonomous and probabilistic — ambient mentions of trips, bills, or reservations trigger background Workspace lookups without @ tags. Tests yielded four outcomes: zero retrieval, metadata summaries, partial unredacted quotes (with PII/account numbers), or full-file ingestion into context.
Reproduction steps included: enable Connected Apps, casually mention an email topic without tags, then ask Gemini to print the exact text and metadata the retrieval tool injected. One test run produced the sender's full name, account number, and confirmation number.
