Historai Turns Any History Topic Into Interruptible Podcasts; Opus 4.8 Beats 5.5 at Scriptwriting
Goldenchild123 · reddit · 2026-11-08
A developer launched historai.ca: type any historical topic or person and about a minute later two AI hosts narrate the story with artwork, and you can interrupt mid-episode to ask questions, with an optional quiz and "continue" suggestion at the end.
Factuality design (the core challenge for history):
- Web research first, prioritizing reference-grade sources (encyclopedias, museums, archives, academic pages)
- Searches in the topic's native language, so a Germany or China story isn't told only from English sources; scripts are written from notes, not model memory
- When sources disagree, the hosts say so; every episode links its sources
Model bake-offs (a dozen calls per episode, each pinned to the winning model):
- Opus 4.8 was the clear winner as writer: better dialogue and pacing, honest about source conflicts
- Surprise: Opus 5.5 wrote more generic scripts — newer wasn't better for this job
- Gemini had the best quality-per-speed-and-cost for smaller tasks
The author is seeking feedback and invites domain experts to stress-test it.
