Tesla killed Cybertruck because robotaxi rentals beat selling big EVs
PTrubey · x · 2026-11-08
Analyzing Tesla's cancellation of Cybertruck and Model S/X, the author argues Tesla simply couldn't build these large vehicles cheaply enough — if the undisputed king of EV cost reduction can't make a big EV SUV or pickup pencil out, the problem is structural. The path forward is the Cybercab model: spreadsheet analyses show autonomous transport rental is far more profitable than selling cars, so renting out fully autonomous large SUVs, trucks, and robovans finally makes financial sense. Tesla is likely waiting to start production of larger autonomous vehicles.
