- Kape Technologies (founded 2011 as Crossrider, an ad-injection toolkit) acquired CyberGhost (2017), ZenMate (2018), Private Internet Access (2019), ExpressVPN (2021, $936M), plus VPN review publisher Webselenese — meaning the reviewer and much of the reviewed share an owner.
- Cautionary precedent: in Feb 2024 the FTC fined Avast $16.5M for selling browsing data for six years while marketing tracker-blocking. Advice: check who owns your VPN before trusting it.
