FT: Anthropic pays $3.4B for 1.7GW of Caterpillar gas generators

Per the FT, Anthropic paid $3.4B for 1.7GW of Caterpillar gas generators — the largest known power-equipment purchase by an AI lab. It took over orders San Antonio supplier OnePWR Solutions placed two years ago but couldn't finance; Anthropic had planned to be a customer but instead bought the engines plus engineering and construction. Because the orders predate the price surge, engines arrive within two years instead of joining multi-year queues. xAI made a similar move with $2B of mobile gas turbines, and Alphabet bought energy developer Intersect in late 2025. Anthropic has disclosed nearly $900B in computing commitments through 2045, securing power, chips and land at premium prices.
