OpenAI Daybreak Blue lockout: hardware key swap triggers 403 verification failure
Formal_Kick2995 · reddit · 2026-11-08
A Reddit user (a security researcher with published GitHub Security Advisories) describes losing OpenAI Daybreak Blue access after replacing a broken FIDO2 hardware key: he removed the old key from the Daybreak Access Keys section before registering the replacement, which forced re-verification via Persona. All attempts were rejected, the account now returns HTTP 403 with cyberverificationprecheckfailed, and Daybreak shows as unavailable.
Key details:
- OpenAI policy allows only one verified account/organization per person, and multiple verification attempts can lead to blocked access — he learned this only after trying on other accounts
- His case has been escalated to OpenAI support; he's asking whether anyone has ever regained eligibility after a Persona rejection
The post highlights how fragile and punitive OpenAI's Daybreak verification process is: a simple hardware key replacement, done in the wrong order, can apparently cost you access permanently.
