GitHub's new Git storage architecture handles 7,200 pushes/sec with 5,000 concurrent agents per repo

GitHub details its next-gen Git storage architecture designed to support agentic development for hundreds of millions of developers. Internal testing shows 5,000 concurrent agents pushing 7,200 writes per second to a single repo with consistently low read latency. The design minimizes coordination—Git objects are content-addressed and immutable, so only tiny reference updates need consensus—and decouples storage from compute, with 99.99999% of repos already moved to Azure using per-reference write quorums and virtual replicas backed by Azure Blob Storage.
