Asking Claude what happens to a deleted chat: copies kept up to 30 days
alex_verem · x · 2026-11-08
Alex Verem shared a screenshot of Claude (Opus 5.5 High) explaining chat deletion: deleting only removes the chat from your screen. Major AI services keep a server copy for up to 30 days, longer if a safety review or court order applies (as with millions of ChatGPT chats retained by a US court in 2025). Chats sent while training was enabled may already sit in datasets, and backups can outlast 30 days. Only chats with local open models on your own machine vanish instantly.
