NIST sets post-quantum deadlines: key exchange by 2030, RSA banned by 2035

NIST published the final version of its 'Transition to Post-Quantum Cryptography Standards' roadmap on October 27, setting hard deadlines: federal key-exchange migration by 2030, digital signatures by 2031, and RSA and elliptic-curve cryptography disallowed by 2035. The report maps each quantum-vulnerable algorithm to the replacement standards finalized in 2024. While an encryption-breaking quantum computer remains a lab project (qubits need near-absolute-zero dilution refrigerators reliant on scarce helium-3), the migration has entered CIO agendas — Red Hat and Vancouver-based QSE have briefed on it, Cloudflare hosted a dedicated session, and the topic is expected to dominate AWS re:Invent.
