Dev open-sources Codemm: turn your own coding agent into a step-by-step tutor
gael55x · reddit · 2026-11-08
An indie dev released Codemm, an MIT-licensed coding tutor app (Mac/Windows, requires Docker). The problem it solves: asking AI to teach you something dumps a wall of text at once, and you end up copying code without learning.
How it works:
- You name what you want to learn (Python, React, data structures, etc.); your existing coding agent (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor experimentally) generates a roadmap you can reorder, trim, and approve.
- Then it goes one topic at a time: a short lesson plus an exercise on just that topic, and you write the code yourself. "Try it" runs visible tests; "Check" grades for real. The built-in assistant Emm only explains and hints, never writes your code.
- Adaptive difficulty: first-try success makes the next exercise harder, struggles ease it off; skipped topics return later, with spaced review at 1/3/7/21/60 days.
- A clever detail: every exercise is validated before being shown — the agent writes a reference solution plus deliberately broken variants, and the exercise is kept only if the tests catch every broken one.
- Code runs in network-disabled Docker; Codemm calls no model API and never touches credentials, just reuses the agent you already have.
