A study in npj Digital Medicine shows a locally deployed open-source LLM framework can automate clinical research database construction, ending manual chart review. The team extracted 136,425 structured kidney cancer data points from 130K clinical notes with 97.5% agreement—outperforming manual review. The paper argues manual abstraction is labor-intensive, costly and error-prone, calling this the beginning of the end for manual chart review.
