Open-source satmux boosts inflight GEO Wi-Fi up to 6.4x with $0.03/h VM relay
steipete · x · 2026-11-08
Developer Th0rgal open-sourced satmux, a TCP multiplexer and 1-RTT HTTP/TLS relay for geostationary (GEO) inflight Wi-Fi (Inmarsat GX, Viasat, Panasonic, SITA), built in pure Python stdlib with zero dependencies.
- How it works: 12 warm BBR TCP pipes multiplexed with 1-RTT Ground-TLS and zlib compression, bypassing the 443 split-TCP proxy that causes timeouts and TCP resets on high-latency links (620ms RTT measured)
- Results: a 6-origin burst went from 14.87s (3/6 failed) to 2.33s (0 failed) — 6.4x faster with 78% lower TTFB; previously timing-out sites (GitHub, HN, PyPI) all fixed, MDN dropped from 12s to 2.3s (5.2x)
- Cost: relayed through a $0.03/hour EU VM, giving roughly 4x faster, reset-free internet on flights without Starlink
