Indie dev builds Earth-scale open world game engine in C++ with real map data
NachoSoto · x · 2026-11-08
Indie developer @chuckyc is building a game "like GTA and Apple Maps v1 had a baby": a custom C++ engine with Metal/Vulkan rendering that streams OpenMapTiles and other public-domain mapping data to render the entire Earth as a playable open world. He bought the domain, launched a site and mailing list. Current sandbox features Earth-scale procedural weather (rain, storms, clouds, tornadoes, hurricanes) you can watch approach and travel across in timelapse; runs on all Apple platforms. No gameplay yet—just layers of systems.
