Opinion: AI-built apps over YouTube and Amazon data turn platforms into gold mines

Inspired by Karpathy's HackerTube (built with Claude Code over YouTube data) and Jason's custom UI layered on Amazon's catalog, the author argues that in the AI era people can easily build custom applications and experiences on top of existing data sources.
This means data holders are sitting on a gold mine: figuring out how to expose that data to AI agents—and monetize the access—will become a huge business. Not everyone will want to build custom apps over other companies' data, but the market can be large enough to create new revenue streams for platforms.
