The 7-layer Agentic Engineering Stack: an agent is only as good as its infrastructure
Pavan_Belagatti · x · 2026-11-07
After months of experimenting with AI agents, the author argues an agent's effectiveness depends on the engineering infrastructure around it — the smartest model and coding agent accomplish little without the right context, tools, permissions, and observability. He lays out a 7-layer Agentic Engineering Stack:
- Interfaces (where work is requested): Port, Slack, Jira, Linear
- Coding Agents: Claude Code, Codex, Copilot, Cursor
- Models (reasoning engines): Claude, GPT, Gemini, Llama
- Context & Knowledge: Port Catalog, GitHub, Confluence, PagerDuty
- Tools (MCP): MCP, Kubernetes, AWS, Terraform
- Guardrails (what agents may do): Scorecards, Snyk, Okta, Vault
- Delivery & Observability: GH Actions, Argo CD, Datadog, Sentry
Note the infographic is Port.io marketing material (Port appears in multiple layers), so treat the framing as useful but vendor-driven.
