The Coasean Singularity slide resurfaces: Paretotopia as an alternative alignment target
amplifiedamp · x · 2026-11-07
Ivan Vendrov shares a slide from a talk he gave last year on "The Coasean Singularity," re-circulated by amplifiedamp.
The slide proposes Paretotopia: a hypothetical state of the world in which positive-sum bargains between all sentient beings are struck as soon as they are discovered.
It argues this is preferable to Friendly AI / Singleton as a positive vision / alignment target because:
- Humans (or their chosen descendants) retain agency
- The space of bargains is infinite, leading to a dynamic, diverse future (cf. Hayek's civilizational standstill through social control)
- Much less concentration of power, hence less vulnerability to corruption
