MCP server operators on stopping Sybil abuse: 43k emails spread across 521 accounts

The author distills firsthand lessons from public MCP server operators on telling anonymous agents apart — and what he got wrong:
- Per-IP limits don't work: shared egress (serverless NAT, corporate proxies) makes runaway loops and careful users indistinguishable; nobody defended it.
- The real abuse was Sybil, not loops: one email-MCP operator saw a free account burn a month of sends within minutes, then 70+ accounts/hour; another wave spread 43,000 emails across 521 accounts (80 each), defeating any per-account limit. It surfaced only when AWS reviewed the SES account at a 13.8% bounce rate.
- Best defenses target cost, not identity: credits tied to billable units (50 free credits, failed calls refunded), tiering tools by cost (cheap discovery open, expensive tools require caller's own key), and non-retryable errors with named fallback tools to stop retry storms.
- Free-to-mint IDs don't help free tiers — they cost abusers nothing, same as fresh accounts.
- Open question: OAuth authenticates the user but not which of their agents is calling; a suggested fix is per-agent revocable credentials under the user's account.
