How online services will die: a dev uses Codex to ditch paid cloud services one by one
burkov · x · 2026-11-07
Developer burkov shows how AI coding agents kill middleman services, using his product ChapterPal as a running example:
- Imported Spotify liked songs to YouTube Music via Codex, making migration services irrelevant
- Image resize service exceeded free tier → Codex found the feature was already in his Cloudflare plan and rewrote the integration
- Cloudflare billed for resizing → Codex moved resizing in-house, keeping only caching on Cloudflare
- GCP Cloud Run per-second billing grew → Codex migrated container execution to an external VPS
- Next: self-hosting the container registry in Supabase storage, eventually landing on bare-metal infra
His thesis: when Codex can rewrite integrations on demand, switching costs collapse and thin-layer online services lose their moat.
