GitHub's new Git storage handles 5,000 concurrent agents and 7,200 pushes/sec per repo

GitHub details its new Git storage architecture, which in internal testing supported 5,000 concurrent agents on one repository with 7,200 pushes per second while serving reads at low latency. Key ideas: minimize coordination (Git objects are immutable and content-addressed, so only tiny reference updates need consensus), decouple storage from compute, move 99.99999% of repos to Azure with per-reference write quorums and virtual replicas on Azure Blob Storage, plus Ref-CAS and compaction nodes shown in the architecture diagram. It's the foundation for agentic development at scale, migrated while GitHub stayed running.
