Musk: SpaceX to attempt first-ever Starship upper stage tower catch with Ship 42 in about a week
XFreeze · x · 2026-11-07
Elon Musk confirmed SpaceX is preparing Ship 42 for the first-ever attempt to catch a Starship upper stage with the launch tower in about a week. Starship has already nailed multiple precise soft landings in the ocean — accurate enough that a tower at those sites would have caught it — but an actual tower catch demands far higher reliability to avoid damaging the tower or endangering people from falling debris. Success would be the key breakthrough toward full and rapid reusability. Musk also noted 42 is 'a special number,' fitting for the historic attempt.
